Elena Seti\u00e9n (San Sebastian)
Basque multi-instrumentalist Elena Seti\u00e9n’s Thrill Jockey debut Another Kind Of Revolution will be released on 15 February 2019. Seti\u00e9n\u2019s declarative gestures both musically and lyrically breathe lifeinto her expressive allegories. Her careful arrangements are direct and affecting, her smooth vocals inviting with their warmth. Seti\u00e9n’s creative choices bely her independent spirit and the results are irresistible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elena plays nearly every instrument on the album, a testament to her independent spirit. The album’s first single, title track ”Another Kind Of Revolution,” features one of the album’s only guest performers, Steve Gunn. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seti\u00e9n grew up during a period of political upheaval in Spain, in the Basque region. The turmoil of the post-dictatorship period of the 1980s and the intensive civic actions left her with a sense of duty to fight for progress. A brief encounter with Laurie Anderson more recently also profoundly affected Seti\u00e9n. Specifically, Anderson\u2019s parting thoughts on being an artist today: \u201cYou just have to make something beautiful and free.\u201d Revolution is, for Seti\u00e9n, going back to simple truths and manifesting the beautiful in people. Her lyrics throughout Another Kind Of Revolution describe the beauty of everyday life, nature, and promote the forces of change not as a burden, but as the very source of hope to draw from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Liis Ring (Tallin\/G\u00f6teborg))<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Liis Ring har l\u00e4nge sysslat med experimentell underground-pop i DIY-anda. Hon debuterade 2014 med LP:n \u201dFables of a Faraway Land\u201d, som sl\u00e4pptes p\u00e5 estniska skivbolaget \u00d5unaviks under pseudonymet cirkl. Albumet gav henne mycket uppm\u00e4rksamhet i hemlandet, och tv\u00e5 kortare turn\u00e9er i Europa f\u00f6ljde under 2015 och 2016. Medan hon studerade musikproduktion p\u00e5 Musikh\u00f6gskolan i G\u00f6teborg sl\u00e4ppte hon under eget namn den dr\u00f6mska och popiga EP:n \u201dSatori\u201d. I slutet av 2018 utgav hon albumet \u201d\u00c5ker\u201d; hennes mest konceptuella album hittills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201d\u00c5ker\u201d utforskar det plats- och rumsspecifika i musikskapandet. L\u00e5tarna \u00e4r inspelade p\u00e5 platserna d\u00e4r de kom till och tidsm\u00e4ssigt s\u00e5 n\u00e4ra inspirationsmomentet som m\u00f6jligt. I till\u00e4gg till traditionella instrument har f\u00e4ltinspelningar, noise och andra \u201dinstrumentifierade\u201d ljud en mycket viktig roll i l\u00e5tarnas arrangemang. \u201d\u00c5ker\u201d \u00e4r ett f\u00f6rs\u00f6k att uppmuntra oss till att omv\u00e4rdera v\u00e5ra vardagsljud och -omgivningar genom att ge dessa en egen r\u00f6st. Detta har blivit en metod f\u00f6r Liis Ring som hon kommer vidareutveckla \u00e4ven i sin n\u00e4sta release som kommer sl\u00e4ppas i september 2019.

The film, (a lip-smacking foray into the history, consumption, cultivation and culinary\/curative powers of Garlic) features internationally renowned chef Alice Waters of Chez Panisse and a flavorful musical soundtrack.
In 2004 GARLIC AS GOOD AS TEN MOTHERS was one of 25 films, selected by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Film Registry list of films to be preserved in perpetuity.\u201dAr eview:
